Necessity is the Mover of Invention

When you break your finger right before several holiday shows and need small gifty items, this is what happens! I couldn’t work on my wheel or use my larger molds, so I went to a craft store for inspiration and BAM! I discovered molds for soap making. These tiny vases have been a hit ever since.

How I Make Them:

My wall hanging planters are made using soap molds. I roll out a slab of brown clay and sculpt it into the mold. Once it’s a leather hard consistency I cut the excess clay from the edges and attach the back using a process called scoring and slipping. Next, I paint white slip (a liquid white clay) over the surface before using underglazes to paint the design of the cities and skies. I use various carving tools to carve the outlines of the buildings and details, exposing the brown and white clay layers below to add depth and texture. Then they are bisque fired, glazed with a clear glaze and fired once more making them water tight.
